Playing Basketball Is Fun And A Great Workout

You probably felt like you entered an alternate universe the first time you played basketball. You were learning how to pass, dribble, and shoot. Now you may feel that you know quite a bit about the game. The following advice will prove there are things you did not know.

When dribbling, your head must be up, and you need to look forward. If you have to keep your eye on the ball when you’re dribbling, practice can remedy that. Bring your ball along when you go out. Try dribbling even when walking to a store. Staring at the ball doesn’t allow you to watch the other players.

Make sure to practice your layups whenever possible. 80% of all shots in a game are usually layups. Don’t just walk through a layup drill. It is key to go at game tempo to practice the timing needed to maintain accuracy. This technique builds improve your on-court layup skills.

When learning to dribble, you need to learn to dribble with both hands. This is important because you may have to switch hands when dribbling during a game. Also, learn to dribble behind your back and between an opponent’s legs. This may seem silly, but you may actually use this technique.

Keep in mind that basketball shoes don’t last forever. Ask questions at the store or do research to find out just how many games or months a good pair should last before needing replacement. You need to feel safe in the quality of your footwear when moving on the court.

Don’t prepare more for a game than you do for a practice. If you don’t tape up for practice, don’t do it for games. You will naturally take games more seriously than practice. However, you don’t need to start panicking over a game by overpreparing. Have a consistent and calm routine.

Never leave the practice court without taking some practice shots. Do some free throws, lay-ups and 3-point throws every practice before you leave. Of course you are doing some shooting during practice, but this additional practice will build you in the long run. Keep practicing your shooting on a daily basis.

Stop and ask your coach what you can do to build the team improve. Basketball is a team sport and every component must be working towards a common goal. The coach is there to offer guidance and provide instruction. Ask if there’s anything specific you can do to build and follow his advice.

Never play through an injury when playing basketball. This is a physically challenging game, so you may end up hurt much worse. If you keep playing when you are injured, you could end up with an injury which keeps you from ever playing again. Serious injuries may require medical attention.

Always be aware of where you have your feet and what you are going to do with them next. Stepping even a toe on the baseline with the ball in your hands means you are out of bounds. Taking a lot of steps when you’re not dribbling means you’re traveling and that’s a turnover call. Moving either of your feet when setting a pick, screen, or even take a charge will result in a foul.

To give yourself a big advantage in any game of basketball, study the moves of your opponents. Players often have certain moves that they repeat or a certain approach that they favor. If you can make a plan to disarm their favorite move or approach, you can often outplay them.

Learn to control the ball when you need to change your pace suddenly. If your are able to plant your feet and then quickly dribble the ball while on the move, you gain a distinct advantage over your opponent. If your defenders think you are slowing down to make a shot, they will straighten up to try to block it.

If you find that you think you can being a coach is so easy then go do it. Gather up some younger friends and make a practice team with them. Sometimes it can build a lot to see how it is to try and be a coach who has so many players to manage. You may find a new respect for your coach after that.

When dribbling, try to make your moves below your knee joints. This will mean you have to bend over to dribble the ball and move, but there are advantages. It creates a little more personal space, making the ball harder for an opponent to steal. It also makes it far easier to shake off an opponent for a drive, a shot or a pass.

In order to play basketball you need to have good legs and be free from injuries. Unfortunately many people who play basketball develop injuries to their ankles. You can prevent these injuries by getting yourself a good pair of basketball shoes. Although they are pricier these days, it’s well worth it if you want to prevent those horrible ankle injuries.
